The lower part of carapace or breastplate is formed by the sternum and sternal region of the ribs, which are added patches of scales.

The head, neck, and limbs are the only parts of the body that protrude from the shell, and they can usually fit entirely inside the shell.

There are three main groups of turtles: land turtles that live exclusively on land, aquatic turtles that live in or near freshwater, and marine turtles that are found in the oceans.

Inland turtles, the carapace is particularly dense and can represent two-thirds of the total weight of the animal. The shell serves as protection from hazards, to keep them warm and to store calcium.

Turtles do not have visible ears on the outside; their ears are internal and located behind the eyes. They do not have teeth but rather a beak.

Tortoises spend much of their time looking for food. They are mostly herbivorous and eat what they find on their way: plants, insects, carrion, etc.

Aquatic turtles also spend a lot of time looking for food. They can be carnivorous, herbivorous, or omnivorous. Carnivores generally consume carrion, rodents, fish, crustaceans, etc.

Those that are necessarily herbivorous consume mainly semi-aquatic plants, algae, and fruits. Omnivorous aquatic turtles, on the other hand, consume part of the diet of carnivorous turtles as well as items that are part of the diet of herbivorous turtles.

Marine turtles use what is in the sea for their food. Depending on the species, this may include algae, fish, jellyfish, and other marine foods.

The life expectancy of turtles varies according to species. On average, terrestrial turtles live about 50 years and aquatic turtles for nearly 40 years. Longevity records have been recorded for giant turtles at 175 years or even 250 years!
