In this species, sexual dimorphism is deeply marked. Thus, males differ from females by their tail train. This one has supreme covering feathers with golden greenish tones, decorated with ocelots.

To attract the female’s attention, Pavo cristatus usually shakes and lifts these feathers, forming a kind of fan. However, I could occasionally do this outside of dating.

The color of this bird denounces its kinship with the Pheasant (both belonging to the Pheasant family). Like their cousins, the male peacocks are more conspicuous and a little larger than the females.

From the beak to the end of the tail, the male can reach more than 2 m. This does not mean much, as the long tail feathers easily exceed 1 m. Its weight varies around 4 kg, and the height is about 80 cm. The meat is good, without being especially tasty.

However, only young birds are suitable for consumption, as in adults, the meat becomes very rigid. For this and other reasons, peacocks are bred worldwide for ornamental purposes only.

The minimum space to raise a couple is 4m x 4m. Perch is mandatory, as the peacock likes to climb trees and other high places.

The peacock consumes about 100 g of food per day. The feed should be left at will, but just as the water should always be changed.
